First Access – An introduction to instrumental learning

First Access is one of the key initiatives of the government’s National Plan for Music Education.  The aim of the First Access is to introduce students at Key Stages 1 – 3 to learning an instrument through weekly whole class instrumental lessons.

In Cornwall, we are able to offer a FREE one term (12 week) programme which consists of a grant to fund:

  • An initial Planning session with the deliverer and classroom teacher (and ideally school senior manager) to review music provision in the school and plan how First Access will be embedded

  • 10 x 45 minute whole class instrumental lessons on a weekly basis on the same instrument

  • A final Review meeting to discuss future development of musical learning and next steps.

Schools are responsible for providing their own instruments or a class set can be hired from the Cornwall Music Education Hub at a subsidised rate. Click here to access thier website for further information.

How does my school access this programme?

All schools are eligible to apply for the First Access grant provided that the class for which it is being claimed has not previously participated in the First Access programme.

The school can identify us as a provider to deliver the one term programme. We can help you with the application process.
